StreetShares, the social finance community for veterans and their supporters, recently announced the formation of the StreetShares Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The goal of the Foundation is to inspire, educate and support veteran small business owners. Providing free educational business resources in the form of eBooks, articles and videos is the main goal of the Foundation.
By partnering with companies like JPMorgan Chase & Co., the Foundation also provides three veteran business owners with $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 each month in Veteran Small Business Awards.
First Month Award Winners
Last month was the first month of awards. Ten veteran business owners with companies ranging from the service industry to technology were presented to the public who determined first, second and third place.
The first place winner was Chris Dyer, 20-year Marine Corps Veteran and owner of Grunts Frozen Yogurt & Ice Cream. His ice cream shop displays military memorabilia to bring the military-community feeling and awareness to historic Mason, Texas, a town of approximately 2,500 people.
Amy Crispino, military spouse and co-owner of Chameleon Kids, won second place. Based in Clarksville, Tenn., Amy runs a magazine called Military Kids Life where military families, including children, share their stories about being deployed around the world in a positive way.
The third place winner was Melissa Washington, Navy Veteran and founder of Women Veterans Alliance (WVA). Melissa created a community where women Veterans can turn to for resources including professional development and entrepreneurship. She also hosts the “Unconference” near Sacramento, Calif.
“Veteran business ownership has been the backbone of the United States economy since World War II,” said Mark L. Rockefeller, Director of the StreetShares Foundation and an Iraq War Veteran. “The goal of the StreetShares Foundation is to provide a new generation of veteran small business owners with the support they need to thrive.”
