We’ve all seen how politicians trip all over themselves thanking us. We all know that these empty platitudes are good press for politicians. We’ve all seen and heard rousing speeches that elicit wild applause from Americans. And we’ve all silently wondered if their words are genuine. It’s very hard to tell.
Perhaps that’s where this slogan came from: “Patriotism is the last vestige of a scoundrel.”
It’s hard to determine if those stock phrases are earnest reflections of appreciation or if those words camouflage an arrogant insincerity. Because the intent is impossible to determine, we give people the benefit of the doubt.
Here’s how a true veteran advocacy organization put it:
Let me put this in a language Donald Trump can understand.
You are a loser. You are a third-rate politician who clearly doesn’t understand issues, and is so scared of Megan Kelly exposing that fact that you’re looking to use veterans to protect you from facing her questions.
The veterans plan on your website is a joke, and refers to the VA as the “Veterans Administration,” even though it’s been the Department of Veterans Affairs for almost 30 years. It’s pathetic.
We are not your prop, and if you aren’t going to show up at tonight’s debate, you should use that time to craft a coherent plan to care for our country’s veterans.
Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have both offered plans and legislation to care for our veterans. It’s long past time Donald Trump cut the bombastic talk and spend some time thinking about how he’d do the same.
Chairman and Iraq War Veteran
Trump says he won’t be at the debate tonight.
Isn’t it maliciously shrewd to hold a charitable “veterans” event at the same time as the Presidential debate?
Why — when his country needed him most — did he apply for and receive four deferments from the draft?
I ain’t buying it.
